There are reports of
an especially potent type of Malware being distributed via links in Instant
Messaging systems.
This Instant Messaging, IM Malware can infect a user's PC when they click on
links in some Instant Messages.
The risks of IM Malware are not new, but this Malware comes
with what seems to be an increase in the number of malware attacks via IM
systems.
These malware attacks may be new types of malware and hence security software
using just signature based detection may not be able to detect them. These
are called Zero Day malware.
To try prevent Zero Day attacks it is advisable to use security software with
heuristics (or behavioural) type malware detection.
Such System Security
Software is able to detect malware on a PC, before it is actually
identified as 'Malware' in the wild. Such software observes and reports on
the characteristics of suspicious activity.
Whilst not a perfect system, such an approach can help prevent such zero day
attacks.
Vigilance is also a good way to help prevent Zero Day attacks, such as this
reported IM malware.
