Microsoft is
reporting a vast reduction in the Waledac botnets destructiveness after
issuing domain takedowns.
Microsoft takesdown waledac botnet by taking legal action against the domains
associated with the waledac (bot)network (botnets).
This waledac botnet takedown has effectively reduced the communication between
infected zombie botnets computers, Microsoft says.
Whilst it is still early days, such a success on the waledac botnet takedown may
signal the strength of legal recourse in the fight against botnets, and other forms
of malware.
Botnets are networks of computers that
automatically communicate and operate with each other, They are generally
associated with malware and other nefarious purposes.
The computers within the botnet are frequently infected user computers who are
unaware of the existence of the botnets within.
In the case of Microsoft's takedown of the waledac botnet, the domain servers,
where the waledac botnet wold communicate over, were effectively taken out of the
overall network.
If this takedown proves successful, then the method may be used more frequently
in the future with malware botnets, not only by Microsoft.
However botnets may adapt to this and provide a work around. Be sure
you use Security Software and keep
it up to date to help prevent botnets from using your PC.
So far, kudos to Microsoft for their waledac botnet takedown.
