Slashkey, developers
of Farm Town, have warned that some ads may contain malware in the form of
anti-virus scams.
It is important to be clear that this would not be a scam by
Farm Town nor by Facebook.
It appears the ads are those which can occur that give a fake warning
regarding a fake malware threat.
The Facebook Farmtown virus scam then tries to get the user to download a fake
anti-virus program, which is itself malware.
Virus scams like this are not uncommon, and Slashkey seem quite concerned to
warn their Farmtown user base of this virus scam.
How to avoid these scams is sometimes
difficult. Experience shows that such virus scams are common and hence users
need to be wary of such claims (viz: virus detected by something other than
your security software).
- Don't follow the links.
- Use Security
Software to help identify virus scams malware and bad sites.
- Report suspicious activity to website and advertising company.
Facebook, and even Farmtown or similar users, should also be wary of
potential scam offers as per the recent Ikea Facebook Giftcard Scam and
Wholefoods Facebook Scam.
Remember, commonsense is a good way to avoid such Farmtown virus
scams as the one mentioned here.
